Celebrating Kwanzaa

Celebrating Kwanzaa

Materials Needed:

Red, green & black decorations (e.g. streamers, construction paper, balloons)
Food for the feast (karamu)
African musical instruments
African stories for storytelling

What to Do:

Explain to the children how Kwanzaa is celebrated.
Prepare dishes or have parents prepare the dishes and bring them in.
Invite the children to help to prepare for the celebration by helping to decorate the room.
If possible see if you can find some African musical instruments your class can borrow for the celebration. If musical instruments are not available for your use, you may want to use a tape or CD of African music.
Explain to the children that on the sixth night of Kwanzaa, it is the time for feasting and celebrating through music, storytelling and thanksgiving.
