Textured Planes

Textured Planes

Materials Needed:
Image1 Heavy cardboard ramps (at least two)
Image1 Sandpaper
Image1 A variety of objects to roll down the ramps ( e.g. marbles, balls, cars, cardboard tubes)
Image1 Building blocks (3 inch blocks or 6 inch blocks)
Image1 Tape
Image1 Glue

What to Do:
Image1 Glue sandpaper onto one of the ramps so it is completely covered.
Image1 Leave one of the ramps smooth.
Image1 Tape the ramps to either the 3 inch blocks or the 6 inch blocks (make sure you use the same size blocks on each of the ramps), to form an inclined plane.
Image1 Invite the children to guess which objects will roll faster, down which of the ramps.
Image1 Instruct the children roll the same kind of object down each of the ramps at the same time. Image1 This is to see whether the objects roll faster on the textured plane or the smooth one.
