Apple Oxidation

Apple Oxidation

Materials Needed:

An apple
Lemon juice
Bowl
Small plates
Apple corer/slicer or a knife (for adult use only)

What to Do:

*Cut an apple into slices (an apple corer/slicer works well for this step).
Put lemon juice into a bowl and coat half of the apple slices with it.
Place the lemon coated and plain uncoated apples on two separate small plates.
Invite the children to observe apples on both plates.
After a period of time passes, observe how the lemon-coated apples differ from the plain apples.
Explain how the lemon juice helps to keep the oxygen from the apple slices, which results in a much slower discoloration process.

* This step should be done by an adult.
