Liquid Layers

Liquid Layers

Materials Needed:

Large clear jar
Water
Cooking oil
Molasses
Honey
Pencil
Paper

What to Do:

Using a wide mouth clear jar (e.g. mayonnaise jar, pickle jar) pour molasses, honey, water, and oil slowly, one at a time into the jar.
Observe how the liquids separate into different layers.
Ask children which liquid they think will sink to the bottom, which one(s) will stay in the middle, and which one(s) will settle on the top?
Ask children which liquid they think is the heaviest and which one is the lightest.
Invite children to drop things of different weights into the jar. Watch and record what happens.
