Which Rocks Make Sand?

Materials Needed:

Rocks (2 per child)
Dark pieces of paper
Magnifying glasses
Safety glasses

What to Do:

Place a sheet of dark paper in front of each child.
Have the children put on the safety glasses to protect their eyes before they start rubbing the rocks together.
Instruct the children to rub their two rocks together over the paper (children will see the sand the rocks have produced).
Children can use the magnifying glass to observe the sand more closely.
