Measure a Watermelon

Measure a Watermelon

Materials Needed:
Image1 Yarn
Image1 Scissors
Image1 Watermelon

What to Do:
Image1 Provide children with yarn and scissors.
Image1 Instruct children to look at the watermelon and cut a strand of yarn that they believe will fit around the watermelon.
Image1 Invite each child to take turns placing their strand of yarn around the watermelon.
Image1 After all of the children who have participated in this activity has had a turn trying out the strand they cut, then measure the watermelon and cut a strand of yarn that measures the correct circumference of the watermelon.
Image1 Look at the children’s yarn estimations. Whose guess was closest? Whose strand is shortest? Whose is the longest?

* You may wish to place three labels on the wall “too short, “too long” and “just right”. Hang each child’s yarn strand under the correct label on the wall.
